FIVE GREAT WISDOMS from To Kill a Mockingbird -
2. As you grow older, you'll see white men cheat black men every day of your life, but let me tell you something and don't you forget it-whenever a white man does that to a black man, no matter who he is, how rich he is, or how fine a family he comes from, that white man is trash. Pg. 233 (Atticus)
In this quote, Atticus Finch is telling his children how man will treat man. When Harper Lee wrote this, she knew what she was saying, because even today man still fights man. Men will always have something negative to say against another man. This is one reason many people say our planet cannot be a utopia. In the book, white men are going up against a black man and are accusing him of rape. Of course, back when the book was written, there was still major segregation and discrimination of white and black men and women. Atticus does a great deed to his daughter here and gives her some advice on how to live life better. He lets her know rights from wrongs, and keeps her from getting them confused like most people do.
